Did I hear him right?

At the March 16th forum, I thought I heard Ed Schock say that the white population in Elgin GREW by 9%.
And that the growth is due to higher fertility among Latinos.

It appears to me that the census comparison would indicate that the white only population DROPPED in both percentage and actual numbers.

...and that the ADULTS grew faster than the under 18 group.

Just another example of playing fast-and-loose with the data at the forums.

    A polished politician he is, Don't let the smooth talk fool you. If you say it with a straight face and no one calls you on it then I guess you fooled them. Great catch.

    I know what he was saying. Some Hispanics classify themselves as white AND Hispanic on the form, which is valid as far as it goes.
    But when measuring white flight, that number doesn't wash. You need to look at the change in "Not Hispanic - White" to accurately evaluate what is going on here.
