Foot-in-mouth Awards

AFLA bestows its first ever Foot-in-mouth Awards for political foolishness.

Third Place goes to Henry Haupt of the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office who confirmed that they use the Social Security Online Verification System to verify identification before issuing a drivers license.

So why is it illegal (according to state law) for employers to use that database, but it’s OK to use it for issuing a license? Oops!

Second Place is awarded to the city council as a whole. Their responses on the AFLA questions were so repetitive they must have been scripted. Some examples repeated over and over were:
“…not do business with anyone who hires illegal aliens for over one year.”
“The city fully complies with all Social Security number verification requirements.”
"The official language of the state of Illinois is English.”
“ICE would not be interested in assigning a CAP officer…”
“The city of Elgin already has an ordinance that allows…”
“…70 percent to 80 percent of people cited for not producing proof of insurance actually have the insurance.”
“…ICE developed a new program called ICE Agreements of Cooperation and Communities to Enhance Safety and Security (ICE ACCESS).”
“…Elgin Police Department intends to expand immigration screening…”
Fellas, when everybody is thinking the same, nobody is thinking. You looked foolish making all the same comments. You were elected because of your unique way of looking at things, not because we like 7-0 votes all the time.

First Place goes to John Steffen who replied: “Having been involved with mortgage companies by practicing real estate law for 17 years I can relate that mortgage companies have been imposing ever stricter verification procedures when loans close, up to and including photo identification, something now required by the Patriot Act. This requirement also applies when a person opens a bank account.”

This statement came out less than a week after Luis Uribe entered a guilty plea to charges he used the same ID and credit history multiple times to sell houses IN ELGIN to illegal aliens. We’re finding it hard to believe that having a secretary photocopy a Social Security Card, then toss it in a file folder, amounts to much scrutiny.

So there you have it folks. We salute bureaucrats everywhere for their effective and efficient methods.

  1. Hey, Steffen! You'd better look into that Uribe case. Maybe your firm was present at some of those closings. They were Elgin transactions, you know.

  2. Actually, I'd like to nominate Mr. John Walters, councilman for the City of Elgin for his last response in the Courier News about the 7 questions he and the other dopes in office were asked to respond to. This one makes me flat out ANGRY -

"In conclusion, I would like to note that I am dismayed by the need to answer any of these questions. While I do believe there is a great need for immigration reform in the United States, the Constitution of the United States is quite clear. Article 1; Section 8 details the duties that Congress alone should have including 'To establish an uniform Rule of Naturalization ...' I am a firm believer of the United States Constitution, and I swore an oath to uphold that very Constitution upon my election. These questions asked of the members of the Elgin City Council are no more authoritative than any of your voices. I encourage anyone and everyone who wishes to voice their response to these questions contact the newspaper by letter."

Sir (And I use that title only becuase my parents taught me respect, I'd rather call you a dipshi...) - You're dismayed that the citizens of the city that you represent brought an issue that they feel strongly about and asked you to respond to??? What in the hell are you in office for? You forget who you work for. I can't WAIT for the next election round because I am going to do everything I can to organize people to vote you out. You don't want to address the issues, you don't want to serve the citizens who elected you, then you'll be unemployed. And I'll sleep better at night knowing I helped do that.

  3. All I can say is that Walters and Figueroa are ripe, and I mean VERY ripe for a loss in the 2009 election. This series illustrates their "Westside only" mentality.

Walters is "dismayed by the need to answer any of these questions?"

Wait 'til the 2009 election comes. Then he'll be dismayed about what to do with himself every other Wednesday night sitting at home while his replacement serves the CITIZENS of Elgin.

  4. attn HONEST ELGINITES only, the oster about 2009 election is correct. We, honest citizens, must take back council and u-46 board. after that we can begin the process of bringing these folks to justice. They think they can violate u.s.law with immunity. The Nurenburg trials took years to accomplish, but eventually some criminals were jailed. ELGIN public officials need to know we will pursue prosecution of your criminal acts.

  6. I am so hapy to see the foot-in-mouth awards being presented to the two crooked lawyers on the council Mr. Walters was the one who wanted to put the citizens comments to the end of the council agenda so that the lawyers and developers did not have to wait to hear our bull s--- can you imagine that. John Steffen is so slow i'm not sure that he is breathing some times. None of these poor excuses for leaders have a clue about how to run a city. They must be looking to make money because they are not making brownie points with the voters. I just hope that the citizens memory serves them well when election time rolls around. It is the philosopy of the council members that the citizens have a short memory and don't remember their incompentence, arrogance and just anti-citizen attitudes and this has been true in the past. We cannot continue to have "attention defecit disorder" we must get rid of the current council staff and elect people who really want to serve the legal citizens of this community. We had a chance to get rid of schock but we choaked. We can never let this happend again. We must say good bye to Walters Gilliam and figueroa at the next election! and we need to rewrite the rules so that we can put in place time limits and specific language for performance of elected officials and when they refuse to work for the citizens we can kick them out!!!. The legal citizens are the voters who can put a stop to this madness.
